Rum from Barbados
Barbados can look back on a remarkable tradition of rum production. In 1625 the English took over the almost uninhabited island from the Portuguese and began to settle and grow sugar cane.
Already 30 years later enormous quantities of sugar cane were exported and almost 100 000 inhabitants could be counted. The cultivation of sugar cane is directly linked to the production of rum - thus this also gained in importance. Barbados can boast of being home to the first documented rum distillery.
