Wine from Italy
Already the ancient Romans knew about the art of wine making. The first indications point to wine growing already in prehistoric times, terracotta vessels are the oldest witnesses of this.
The expansion of the Roman Empire spread this far beyond Europe. Also the provinces in today's Rome profited from the large-scale wine trade and the planned wine cultivation.
In general, Italy can be divided into a northern alpine and southern Mediterranean part. Quality wines are cultivated on slopes in almost every region; the flat regions are reserved for olive, cereal or vegetable cultivation.
The DOC designation is a "controlled designation of origin" for Italian wines.
DOCG is the highest level of quality and identifies the "Controlled and Guaranteed Denomination of Origin".
